Soma Vamsa was the most celebrated royal dynasty in Purana and Itihasa. Somavamsa is also known as Chandravamsa . All the main character of M.B. is from Somavamsa. Its history date back to origin of creation
The lotus flower that shoots from Vishnu, the Brahma was born. Brahma, wished to have some mindborn sons. Atri is one among them. To Atri and his wife Anasuya, Chandra was born. Chandra did a lot of Tapas and Rajasuya yaga and begot the three worlds as dakshina (reward). To Chandra and his lover Tara was born Budha. To Budha the mighty king Pururavas was born. Pururavas married Urvasi, the Apsara and to them were born 8 sons: Ayus Dridayu Ashvayu Dhanayu Drithiman Vasu Dhvivijathan Sathayu. To Ayus was born Nahusha Vridhasharma Reji Dhamda Vipashma.
Raja Nahusha carried forward the family legacy; he had seven sons: Yathi Yayati Uttama Panchaka Sharyati and Meghapalaka. Yati was always in meditation and reached Vaikunta at an early age. Yayati had two sons, Yadu and Turvasu by his wife Devayani and Druhyu Anudruhyu (also called Chanu) and Puru by his wife Sarmistha
From the sons and grandchildren of Yayati various secondary dynasties were originated. The sons and grand children of Yayati are given below.
Yadu : The Yadu dynasty owes its origin to Yadu who had five sons : Sahasrajit Krosta Nalanjikan Sathyajith and Raghu (See: Yaduvamsa for more details)
Turvasu : From Turvasu were descended the rulers in order: Vahni Bharga Bhanu Tribhanu Karandhama Marutta
Druhyu : The Rajas Descended from Druhyu is as follows, Babhru Setu Aranya Gandharva Dharma Ghrta Durdama Pracetas Mlecchas.
Anudruhyu : Three sons, Sabhanara, Caksus and Paroksa were born to Anudruhyu.
Puru : Descended from Puru were: Janamejaya Pracinvan Pravira Namasyu Vitabhaya Sundu Bahuvidha Sarhyati Rahovadi and Raudrasva
