Devas (celestial beings) and Asuras (demons) desired to obtain the nectar of immortality, known as Amrita, which was hidden in the depths of the cosmic ocean. As amrita will help them avoid death and old age, they decided to churn the ocean using Mount Mandara as the churning rod and Vasuki, the serpent king, as the rope.

During the churning process, various celestial and divine beings like Kamadenu, Iravata, Lakshmidevi, Apasaras, and Dhanvantari emerged from the ocean. when Kamadeva, the god of love and desire. Kama, in the form of a handsome and enchanting figure, emerged from the depths of the ocean while the churning was underway. His appearance was mesmerizing, and his presence had the power to evoke desire and passion

However, the emergence of Kama during the churning caused a disturbance among the Devas and Asuras, as his presence could potentially distract them from their goal of obtaining the Amrita. Lord Shiva, who was present at the scene, became aware of the situation and understood the significance of the churning process. He opened his third eye and reduced Kama to ashes with a single glance, thus temporarily subduing desire and restoring focus to the churning.

The story of Ksheera Sagara Madana highlights the importance of maintaining focus and determination in the pursuit of higher goals, even in the face of distractions and temptations. It also symbolizes the power of Lord Shiva's discernment and his role as the destroyer of desire.
