Purana

Ramayana Vanaparva gives a version different from the popular Uttara Ramaya story for birth of Ravana. By which, Ravana and Kumbhakarna were born to Vishrava of Puspotkata, and Vibhisana was born to him of Raka, and Khara and Surpanakha were born to him of Malini. Agni Purana gives a complimentary version by which Puspotkata and Kaikasi were considered as one and the same.

Birth of Vishrava: Once during Tredayuga, while Pulastya Maharsi was doing penance on Mount Meru, on a nearby hillock the sage Trnabindu was also doing penance. Celestial maidens, Naga maidens and their lovers came to the lonely place where the sages doing Tapa and with their erotic sports and dances vitiated the precincts of the place. Pulastya got angry and cursed that if any maidens dare to enter his area will become pregnant. Without knowing this curse Malini, daughter of Trnabindu came to the ashram area of Pulastya and got pregnant of the curse. Pulastya then married the girl and the celebrated Maharsi Vishrava was born to her.
