Indian Music. Sangeetham is one of the 64 art classified by Bharatamuni. Gandharvam is a synonymous word. Bharata Muni’s categorise music as (1) vocal, (2) instrumental, (3) vocal plus instrumental, (4) preliminary music (as in before the drama begins)(5) Dhruva music – authored by the director and set to music. Indian classical music also give due importance to Bhava, Raga and Tala.

Classical music has got two broad variations Hindustani and Carnatic. There are many forms of non classical music exists with every socio cultural groups in India. Every Indian village, and Hindu sub-cast has got its own folk music. The system of classical music is based on single raga rhythmically organized through talas.
