Raga means colour. But in Vedata literature it is an undesirable passion or attachment for worldly things. To B.G. raga makes Rajoguna in a man. Raga is commonly used along with the word dvesha meaning hatred is an obstacle in the path of spirituality. Raga-dvesha is a worldly phenomena derived from ones Vasana acquired by Karma of this birth and previous birth.
The word come from the root word ranj (colour). Raga is not entirely wrong or bad. Raga and anuraga are made positive by bhakti vedata sages by transforming the passion to the devotion to god.
In the world of music raga means a tune created by the sapthasvara. There are many ragas such as Hindola, vasantha, Malava, and the like.
