(14th Century CE) Sayana, the Vedic scholers of 14th centrury is the first to interpret the whole literature of Veda with the patronage from Vijayanagara Empire. In his magnum opus work Vedarthaprakasa , which is believed to be done by many scholers under his supervision, the four Veda Samhita, Brahmana and Aranyaka were interpreted for the people who considered Veda as karmakanda.
Sayana was born in the royal family of Vijayanagara with the king Vidyaranya as his elder brother and Mayana and Srimati as parents. He worked with four Vijayanagara emperors as their chief minister. He was a genious well versed in Sanskrit, Scriptures, Arts, Science, polity and even in Martial arts. His teachers are believed to be Sarvajna Vishnubhatta (Vidyatirtha) and Srikantha Upadhyaya.
Apart from Vedarthaprakasa other works ascribed to him are subhasitasudhanidhi (verses on general consciousness and morality), Yajnatantrasudhanidhi (deals with vedic sacrifices), Karmavipaka (on Prayachittas), Ayurvedasudhanidhi( on Ayurveda – text not available now), Dhatuvritti(on root verb in Sanskrit - text not available now), Purusarthasudhanidhi (a treatise like dharmasastras).
Sayana have many followers and critics in all the ages for his interpretation on Veda being concentrated only on karma marga (for doing bahya yajna). But, all generations of Veda loves are indepted to Sayana for keeping the Vedic tradition alive, without which many of the Vedic text and its verses might have been lost.
