Meaning of "Rameswaram"

Rameswaram is one of the 12 Jothirlingas and an important pilgrim centre in the south India. The Siva temple called as Rameswaram (the God of Sri Rama) is situated on a couch shaped island one kilometer away from mainland. It is part of Tamil Nadu and is situated between Palk Strait and gulf of Mannar. The island is connected by Rail and Road.

Adjacent to Siva Temple there is also a Sri Rama (Ramanathaswami) temple. The devotees coming to temple take a shower from the waters of each of the 24 holy tanks in the temple complex.

Apart from the main temple there are several holy places considered as connected with life of Rama and his Vanara Army in the nearby places. It is from this island that the bridge to Lanka is constructed by Rama.

Purana

According to Ramayana Sri Rama worshiped Siva in the form of a Sivalinga here for the success in the impending war with Ravana.
