In General

Dwaraka was the capital city of Sri Krishnas’s Kingdom. The excavation in the area confirm the factual evidence that the city of Dwaraka now submerged in sea was a well developed city once. It was in the west coast of India (Gujrat) and the entire area is geographical protected.

Mahabharatha says, the city was engulfed by sea after the demise of Krishna. A part of the ruins of the city of Dwaraka is still available in the Kutch region of Gujrat and is a major pilgrim centre.

Purana

Legend has it that Sri Krishna killed the demon Kamsa and annointed Ugrasena, the father of Kamsa as the king of Mathura. Enraged, Kamsa's father-in law, Jarasandha, together with his friend Kalayavana attacked Mathura many times. The animity of Jarasandha is only with Krishna and not with Mathura. So, for the safety of the people of Mathura and for the greater good of his Vrishni people Krishna and his people moved away from Mathura to Dwaraka. Sri Krishna and Balarama constructed a beautiful city in Dwaraka and resided there with their family and developed the entire area for the benefit of his Yadava people.
