The word yagna is derived from the Sanskrit root yaj, meaning to give (dan), to unify (sangatikaran) and to perform Devapuja. Yajna practiced as a vedic tradition today is an offering, sacrifice, devotion, worship before fire altar supported by specific mantras from Veda.
Bhagavad_Gita promote the idea that every work can be performed as a yajna. Karmaphalatyaga, detach oneself from the outcome of the action is the true yajna according to Sri Krishna.
Yajna is a Sequence of sacred action. It is a collaborative action by individual, society and cosmic powers for the benefit of whole world. Yajna is both internal and external. Outer Yajna involve fire alter and offering to it, but yagna is not confined to fire altar and sacrificial rites alone. Yajna and vedic mantras can be performed mentally.
