Mother of Lakshmana and Shatrugna; wife of king Dasaratha; daughter of the King of Kasi.

Purana

When Rama decided to leave Ayodhya and live in forest for fourteen years his wife Sita devi and brother Lakshmana followed him. Lakshmana went to Sumitra devi, his mother to seek her blessings and say farewell; she blessed him and said thus:

My dear son! From this moment onwards, you consider Rama as your father Dasaratha; consider Janaka’s daughter, Janaki as me (your mother), consider the forest as Ayodhya, and depart with a happy mind. Farewell to you!”
