Kamsa made many attempt to identify and kill his probable killer born on earth according to prophesies he had. Puthana was one among them.

Purana

When Kamsa tried to kill the eighth child of Devaki, the Yogamaya (the exchanged child) it slipped from his hand went up and said that his killer had already been born and he will have his death soon. Kamsa was frightened by the words thus heard. He decided to kill all the newborn boys and to avoid death. Putana, a Rakshasi was thus secretly sent all over the country to feed poison to all the newborns and thus kill them. Puthana, disguised as young charming women went to every newborn baby in the country and killed thousands of them. When she reached Yasoda’s house Krishna was playing in the bed with nobody near. When she fed the infant Krishna, he sucked not just milk but her prana also. She instantly assumed her original form and fell down dead.
