khila

In General

A supplement or appendix to a text is called as khila. Many important texts have a number of supplementary hymns which makes a separate part. Some of them can be a latter addition to the text but in many cases the khila is some famous hymns which had survived from some other lost text. For examples, Mahanarayana Upanishad is a supplement to Taittiriya Aranyaka and Sri Suktam is a supplement to Rig Veda. Both are from lost recessions of their respective text.

Veda

The famous Vedic sukta, namely: Sri Sukta, Raatri Sukta, Shivasankalpa Sukta, Medha Sukta, are all Khila Suktas of RigVeda

Purana

Khila can also be a later addition to the main text like Harivamsha to Mahabharatha.
