A prominent king of Iksvaku dynasty and son of Emperor Mandhatri. There are many stories in Purana regarding his devotion to Lord Vishnu and how he was protected by Lord.

Purana

:

Once Indra become jalous of Ambarisha and stole the sacrificial cow meant for yajna. Ambarisha searched the cow all the place but could not find. So, the priest advised a human sacrifice to supplement the loss of cow. Ambarisha requested sage Ricika to give his son Sunassepha for sacrifice in exchanged 1000 cow. The frightened Sunassepha prayed to god at the advice of Sage Visvamitra. Indra appeared in yajnasala blessed Sunassepha with longlife and rewarded Ambarisha.

Ambarisha had the habbit of observing Ekadasivrita with great reverence. Once he offered a part of the food prepared for Ekadasivrita to Sage Durvasa. Duvasa become very angry as he thought it is left over food and created a monster called Kritya to kill Ambarisha. But the great devotee Ambarisha had Chakra of Vishnu in his head which killed the monster and chased the Sage. Durvasa went to Vishnu for protection. But Vishnu told to Sage that only Ambarish can help the Sage and thus Durvasa surrended before Ambarish and got relieved.
