Kurukshetra is famous as the battle field of Mahabharatha war. The modern city Kurukshetra of Hariyana is identified as the same place said in epic Mahabharata. Apart from the great war, Kurukshetra is related with Parasurama and Great King Kuru.
Bhagavad Gita start with the words dharmashetre Kurukshetre. Kshetra means the Realm of work. So, Kurukshetra is symbolize to a place where Dharma thrived.
Kuru is a great King who ruled the country in ancient times. There is story about him cultivating eight virtus Tapa, Satya, Kshama, Daya, Shauch, Daan, Yoga and Brahmacharya and how the place came to known as kurukshetra.
