Gayatri is a celebrated vedic chandas or meter. It consisting of 24 syllables - generally arranged in a triplet of eight syllables each. The most famous verse in Gayatri Chandas is Gayatri Mantra of Viswamitra; R.V. (3.62.10). The chandas used here in R.V. (3.62.10) is a variant of Gayatri called Nichrt-Gayatri as it doesn’t have exact number of syllables of Gayatri. There are various other mantras in Vedas which are written in Gayatri meter. The other well known chandas found in Veda are anustubh, usnik, brhati, pankti, tristubh and jagati.
