T aking seven steps by groom and bride jointly around the Homakunda is called Sapthapati. It is an essential part of Marriage ceremony. As per the section 7 of Hindu Marriage Act 1955 a valid marriage ceremony should have this religious function. Usually the cloth of groom and bride is tied with each other during this function. The message the function gives is very explicit: here onwards, in every step we tread, we will be together.
