Melakartha Ragas
The Melakartha ragas are the 72 fundamental ragas or parent ragas from which other ragas are derived. They are sampurna ragas as they contain all the 7 basic swaras. Idea was first propounded by Ramamathyas in his work svaramelakalanidhi in 1550CE.
The fundamental ragas are divided into two groups of 36 of Madhyama Ma1 Ma2.Both of these groups are divided into 6 groups to accommodate the three variants of Ri, Ga, Da, Ni. Sa, Pa do not have any variation and are part of every group.
