Once, Rishi Dhaumya engaged his student Aruni of Panchala to take care of his field. In rainy day Aruni found water flowing to the field from a particular spot. He tried his best to divert water-course, but faild the attempt by all the ordinary means. He was distressed because he could not do his duty of preserving the field. Finally, he saw a way and went down into the breach and lay down himself there, and the water was thus confined.

The Rishi on finding the heavy rain went in search of Aruni with his other two students. They shouted all the way for not finding him. At last they found Aruni in a weak stage lying in the water course. They saved Aruni from the water, and for the dedication to the work Rishi Daumya named him Uddalaka. Uddalaka later became a famous Teacher of Vedas.
