Brigu (Bhrgu) was a vedic rishi, a renouned Saptharshi and a Prajapathi in another duration. Bhrigu was a ManasaPutra (wish-born-son) of Lord Brahma. He compiled predictive astrology as Brighu Samhita. This is the first astrological book and is believed to be written during Tretayuga. Brighu Samhita also contain detailed description on Blood circulation, heart functioning and many disease. Brigu sutra is another work by him, this book is helpful in interpreting horoscope. It is believed that Manusmrti was actually came down to us through Bhigu.
24 Suktas by Bhrgu is found in Rig Veda. Atharva Veda rishi Brghu-Angira, can be a descendent of Brigu.
Brigu was married to Khyati, the daughter of Daksha and was part of early creation of human being. He has two sons by her, named Dhata and Vidhata. Ushana (daughter of Hiranyakashibu) was another wife of him in her a son, the famous Sucracharya was born. In his wife Pauloma he had another famous son, namely: Chavana.
Sage Bhrighu finds mention in the Vayu Purana, where he presided over the great Yagna of Daksha Prajapati (his father-in-law) had conducted. According to the Mahabharata he officiated at Daksha’s celebrated sacrifice, and had his beard pulled out by Lord Siva in anger.
Padma Purana give an account of Brighu testing Trimurthis. Brighu disappointed at meeting with Siva and Brahma for them being engaged with their wives went to Vishnu. But Vishnu was asleep in the lap of Lakshmi. The angry Brighu stamped Vishnu by his feet. Vishnu was not angry at his conduct but accepted the mark Brighu made at his heart as a privilege. But Lakshmi left Vishnu for his unmanliness. However, because of this action Brighu lost his third eye which was at his right foot.
