citta
Chitta (consciousness) is subtle than the other mental activities like manas, buddhi and ahamkara. Just as Maha tattva is primordial form of universe, Chitta is primordial form of body. Chitta is first to appear and develop in the body. Chitta work in the subconscious and further deeper level; its association is more with jiva, the individual self than with the mind. Subconscious mind is a work of citta. Ahamkara is derived from Chitta. Ones habits, memory and qualities are carried in the chitta. Chitta is part of individual self that transmigrate, and so, carry even the memory of past life.
