Bhavishya Purana is one of the 18 important puranas. Bhavishya Purana is the only Purana on prediction; the meaning of word Bhavishya Purana itself connote The History of the Future. It gives a more description of history than tales of moral character. Some of the findings in this Purana can be a later addition but all the prophesies cannot be stamped as additions. Bhavishya Purana also contains a description of a game that resembles modern chess to a great extent. Bhavishya Purana is classed under Rajasika Purana. It is also called as Bhavishyati Purana.
The Purana present its own the story in the introduction as the senior sages like Vasista, Brighu, Pulastya, Pulaha, Kratu, Parasar, Yajnavalkya, Jaimini went to King Shantanika who was a disciple of Veda Vyasa and asked the king to advice which text to follow to ensure Moksha. The King said he is not sure and so better to pose the question to Vyasa himself. Vyasa directed them to his disciple Sumantu to speak about Bhavishya Purana the reciting of which ensure Moksha for a devotee. The descendant of purana is from Brahma to Shiva then to Vishnu, Narada, Indra, Parasar, Vyasa, Sumantu in order.
The purana gives a very accurate forecasts about Buddha, Isa Masih, Mohammad, Noaha, Madhavacharya, Chandragupta, Vikramaditya, Ashoka, Jayadeva and Shivaji, Krishna Chaitanya, Kutubuddin, the Mughals, British rule along with genealogical details of ancient Kings and important personalities.
Bhavishya Puraan that it is divided in four main Parv (sections) - Braahm, Madhyam, Pratisarg, and Uttar. Then Madhyam Parv is divided in three and Pratisarg Parv is divided in four Khand. The main contents of the purana is as follows:
Soorya Dev and his worship. Soorya Dev related stories. Stories under Vetaal-Vikram dialog are the part of 23 Chapters of 2nd Khand, of Pratisarg Parv. They are so interesting and enchanting that they appear in Brihat Kathaa also written by Gunadhyaya; "Brihat Katha Manjaree" written by Kshemendra; and "Katha Saritsagar" written by Somdev. Satya Naarayan Katha is also a part of this Puraan - from 24th to 29th Chapter (6 Chapters) of 2nd Khand of Pratisarg Parv. Aalhaa-Oodal's story is also based on this Puraan. Its another attraction is that the description of future Bharat Varsh (India) is given here in 3rd and 4th Khand of Pratisarg Parv. A description of 180 kinds of fasting related to various religious occasions of the form of gods and goddesses. It describes about 85 kinds of Daan (donations).
