Sankha, the conch shell is a symbol and also an instrument used during pooja (worship). When the conch is blown with controlled breath, the primordial sound of Om (Aum), the vibration of the universe, emanates from it. Sankha is a common object seen in the hands of many Hindu deities, especially those associated with Vishnu and Devi.

Purana

According to the 18th chapter of Brahmavaivartaka Purana sankha was produced from bones of the demon Sankhacuda after he was killed by Siva.
