Ranganathaswamy Temple, Sri
Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple is the most important of the 108 main Vishnu temples. This temple is also known as Thiruvaranga Tirupati and Periyakoil is located at Srirangam, Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu. The temple complex is 156 acres in extent. There are 21 magnificent towers in 7 prakaram providing a unique sight to any visitor. The temple lies on a beautiful island formed by the twin rivers Cauvery and Coleroon. Srirangam temple is the largest functioning Hindu temple in the world, the still larger Angkor Wat is not functioning as a temple in the traditional sense. Its Rajagopuram is 73 meter high. Malik Kafur and his forces took away the idol of the deity and the precious wealth of temple during 14th century. Though the idol was later taken back it was hidden for many centuries. The temple is found mentioned in Silapathikaram and other tamil texts of sangam era.
