Bal Gangadhar Tilak
(1856-1920 AD) A great Nationalist leader and freedom fighter. He was well educated in Sanskrit, Marathi and English. He had a law degree but preferred teaching and social work. He started educational institution which combined Indian and English education. He associated very much with Indian National Congress and become its most inspiring leader. He died of an injury caused by police action on freedom struggle.
He was very proud of Hindu culture and aware of the social problems of his time. He started the tradition of celebration of Ganesha festival in public with the duel object of propagating religion and uniting Hindus divided over many cast. He fought for the self respect and proclaimed ‘swarajya’ is my birthright. During his six year jail term in Myanmar he wrote his famous work 'Gitarahasya', an interpretation on Bhagavad Gita.
Bal Gangadhar Tilak was an expert in Vedas and his work on veda is, 'the antiquities of Veda and the Arctic Home of the Aryans'.
