The word sastra comes from the Sanskrit verbal root śās, which means "to govern, command". So any systematic study is called a sastra in Indian contest. It will be wrong to translate science as sastra.

To science, experiment, observation, mathematical proof define the truth. In addition to these, the ancient Indian considered mahad vachana, or the words of the great people also as a proof to identify the truth. This has made the difference in the meaning of sastra. Sastra is not an exact translation for Science.
