Sadhana Chatushtaya
साधन चतुष्टयं
The Advaita Vedanta school of thought promote the idea of Sadhana Chatushtaya as a preparatory condition for attaining Moksha. It is more or less same as the Yama-Niyama of Patanjali Yoga Sutra. In short, Sadhana chatushtaya is cultivation of virtues and eradication of vices. The four-fold qualifications or system of evolution towards Godhead meant by the word Sadhana Chatushtaya are
1. Viveka : Vedanta describes it as the ability to discriminate between the Sat (real) and Asat (unreal), the Self ( Atma ) and the non-self ( unborn or non existant ).
2. Vairagya : Dispassion or indifference to sensual enjoyments herein and hereafter.
3. Shatka Sampatthi or Shad Samoathi
The Six Virtues a sadaka should cultivate. They are
Kshama : Control or mastery over mind.
Dama : Control of senses
Uparama or Uparati : Perform your duties & renounce other actions
Titiksha : Forbearance-remain neutral in pros & cons of life
Shraddha : Conviction in Vedic literature & Guru
Samadhana : One pointedness of mind
4. Mumukshutwa: Yearning for liberation.
Though Advaita school of thought give high preference to sadhana chatushtaya and Jnana, there is no hard and fast rule in spirituality to accomplish the final stage the Moksha. The spiritual path don’t end with moral lessons, intellectual study, reasoning, debate and discussion.
