Kanva Maharshi was a renowned Rishi, author of several hymns of the Rig Veda. Kanva Smriti is also by him or by his followers. He was son of Ghora and a descendent of Sage Angiras. He brought up Viswamitras daughter Shakunthala. In Abhignyana Sakuntalam, the beautiful play written by Kalidasa, Kanva was given a prominent role.
A recession of Sukla Yajurveda known as Kanva Vajasaneyi is propounded by him. Kanvas hermitage was in the bank of river Malini, 42 Km away from Haridwar. Kanva had a son called Medhatithi.

Kanva is found in Kurma purana where King Durjaya during his penances visiting Kanva for advice.
