Kanishka, the great Indian King who ruled over an area which extent from present day Bihar to Uzbekistan and Tajikistan; this area includes present day Rajastan, Pakistan, Baluchistan, Kashmir, Afghanistan. It goes to the credit of Kanishka that he controlled both the land (the Silk Road) and sea trade routes that connect India with both Europe and China. He reigned during the period (127–150 CE )

Kanishka was a great patron of Mahayana Buddhism. He spread the message of Buddhism to a great extent even beyond his territory. He administered the 4th Buddhist Council in Kashmir as the head of the council. It was presided by Vasumitra and Ashwaghosha . Images of the Buddha based on 32 physical signs were made during his time. It was at this council that the divide of Buddhism as Mahayana and Hinayana become evident

Kanishka was great promoter of art and literature. Many gigantic statues of Buddha was built during his period
