A stairway leading down to a river, or any other water body where people can take bathing or do religious ceremonies.

The Ghats in Varanasi (Kasi) is very famous. There are nearly a hundred ghats on the river bank of Varanasi built by various royal kingdoms in India. These ghats are there from ancient times and were in use. The ghats are adjacent to one another and were renovated from time to time. It has been meant for the use of royal families to pursue their religious education in Kashi or visit Kasi Visvanatha temple or perform religious ceremonies

The Manikarnika and Harishchandra Ghats are the two ghats were cremation is done. Other ghats don’t do this practice. Dashashwamedh Ghat is special for Ganga arathi
