Muhurta denotes a division of time: one-thirtieth of a day, or a period of forty-eight minutes.
Muhurta is also an auspicious moment for staring and good deeds. The position of celestial bodies are considered for calculating Muhurtha. Jyothisa is developed for this purpose.
Yajna is conducted taking into consideration of auspicious Muhurtha.
Muhurthas is personified in Purana as sons of Muhurtha, one of the ten wives of Kala, the Dharmaraja.
