1. Stages of life. All men and women has to go through four ashrama, namely: Brahmacharya (student ship), Garhastya (householder), Vanaprastha(dwelling in the forest) and Sanyasa(ascetic). Each ashrama has got its prescribed duties and responsibilities.
2. Another meaning of ashrama is Hermitage or abode of a holy man leading a life in the forest. The ancient teachers, both ascetic and married preferred to live in forest ashram with their students to keep their folks not to lured away by the luster of city life.
