sādhana

In General

The process of realization of the ultimate reality is termed as Sadana. All spiritual paths are meant for realization and are thus Sadana. Sri T.V. Kapali Sastri is of the opinion that Upanishads besides being philosophical discourse are fundamentally manuals of Sadana, which the Vedic Samhita expects the aspirants to follow in their pursuit of highest spiritual goal.

Veda

Upanishads call sadhana by the technical word Vidyas. The U. teachings are directly from a guru and thus the U. texts are having only few hints about the Vidyas. The ritualism involved in some of the mantras in U. is symbolic and not literal.
