In General

An epithet of Agni. One who know past, present and future is called Jataveda. Agni knows everything and hence called as Jataveda. Many famous suktas like: Agni sukta, Durga sukta, Sri sukta have his epithet for Agni.

Veda

The knower of the births (the worlds). Many Suktas like Durga sukta, Sri sukta have this epithet for Agni.

Purana

The Mahabharata says, ` Vedah tvadartham Jatavedah' (231,41) - the Vedas are born for you! That great Purusha for whom the Vedas originated is said to be Jataveda.
